What Is a Fire Risk Assessment?

Fire risk assessments are required by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which states that they are to be carried out by all businesses and relevant premises in order to;

• Identify potential hazards and risks
• Identify those at risk
• Evaluate and make recommendations on how to best remove or reduce the risks identified

This thorough and strategic process reviews the property with the goal of proactive fire prevention, identifying potential hazards and putting in place solutions to reduce or resolve them, rather than having to be reactive after an issue has already occurred.

The Fire Risk Assessment Process

When you work with T2 Fire, one of our dedicated assessors will visit your premises and conduct a comprehensive evaluation of all the relevant areas of the property for you, to ensure that all requirements are being met.

Some of the areas of fire safety and risk which will be covered during the assessment include;

• The properties age, condition, layout, number of floors, stairwells, lifts etc.
• Persons at risk, who uses the building, are there any vulnerable or higher risk occupants due to their age, job role, mobility or illness.
• Fire safety hazards and risks such as potential ignition sources, materials, fuels and combustible materials etc.
• Fire prevention, protection and management including what current measures and equipment are in place such as fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, fire alarms, fire hoses, fire blankets etc as well as their maintenance.
• Fire safety signage.
• Fire safety training, drills and emergency plan.
• The means of escape in the event of a fire will be evaluated and documented including travel distances, times and measurements.
• Any risks will be evaluated and where possible suitable recommendations will be made as to what action can be taken to remove or reduce them.
• The assessor will document any findings from the risk assessment and record them in detail including any actions that need to be taken to reduce or remove risks.
• The fire risk assessment should be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary.
